Our Story

Some people see light in their lives driving them forward with confidence

Some people follow other people’s lights

For many reasons, others have difficulty seeing light and sit in darkness

And, then there are those rare people who shine a light on those sitting in darkness helping their paths glow with hope

Laura Ditka was that hope and through Laura’s Light, it will continue

MISSION & VISION

Laura’s Light’s mission is to initiate and support programs and organizations that protect and support victims of child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence. Founded in honor of the memory of Laura Ditka, a prominent Pittsburgh attorney who was one person, one woman, who made a profound difference in the lives of people who needed an ally to stand with them and for them.

Nearly every aspect of Laura Ditka’s life revolved around serving others, whether as a public prosecutor advocating for better protocols and training in child abuse cases or as a mentor to law students. Laura’s Light will continue Ms. Ditka’s mission as a tireless advocate for women and children by providing support through grants, programs, and scholarships. These will include but are not limited to Gwen's Girls, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR), and Cribs for Kids.

WHY?

As the Lead Prosecutor in the Penn State child abuse case, Ms. Ditka was quoted as “I hope we made a change. It was important we took it on because, most of all, it was a message that needed to be heard.” And that message still needs to be heard. Since COVID-19, domestic violence has increased 5% in the US and 23% worldwide, and with less than 9% of philanthropy spent on charitable giving to women’s causes, Laura’s Light non-profit organization is more important than ever.
